Maine legislators took big steps to cut Medicaid last session, but whether the momentum will continue depends in large part on which party gains control of the State House on Election Day.
Both major parties are predicting they'll emerge with House and Senate majorities, but whether Republicans will continue to hold sway or Democrats take control is anything but clear.
A spokeswoman says Gov. Paul LePage is considering more welfare cuts to save money while keeping a quality safety net intact. Democrats say they're focused on jobs, but preserving health care should be a priority.
Last session, a budget was passed that removed 19- and 20-year-olds from Medicaid, reduced Head Start and Family Planning, and eliminated funding for home health care visits.
