A new poll is suggesting that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is cutting into President Barack Obama's lead in Maine, and that the same-sex marriage referendum is tightening up.
A survey commissioned by the Maine Sunday Telegram shows Obama leading Romney 49 percent to 42 percent. Obama had a 16 percentage-point lead in mid-September.
On the gay marriage ballot question, supporters had a 13 percentage-point lead over opponents, 55-42 percent. That was down from a 21 percentage-point lead in mid-September.
For the survey, Portland-based Critical Insights conducted live telephone interviews with 613 likely voters statewide on Oct. 30 and 31. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

In Sierra Buttes, Calif., two boys hiked up a jagged cliff and ended up stranded 8,000 feet up. The California Highway Patrol sent a chopper and had to lower a harness to carry them to safety, since climbing down was not an option. Scott Pelley reports.
