Senior Drivers Summit to Take Place at the Augusta Armory

Augusta - The U.S. Census shows Maine has the nation's oldest population, and how those older people will get around will be the topic of a conference.

The Maine secretary of state's office and AAA Northern New England are sponsoring a Senior Driving Summit on Friday at the Augusta Amory. The workshop features national experts covering topics focusing on older driver safety and mobility. Health care professionals, legislators, police and other traffic safety professionals are attending.

If current accident rates do not change, the proportion of Maine crashes caused by drivers over 65 will almost double during the next two decades because of the aging population.

The Maine Auto Dealers Association, Maine Transportation Safety Coalition and Maine Bureau of Highway Safety are also sponsoring Friday's event.
