More than 86,000 electric customers in Maine remain without power in the wake of the powerful storm Sandy.

With the worst of the storm over, Central Maine Power reported more than 83,000 customers without electricity Tuesday morning, with York and Cumberland counties hardest hit.

Bangor Hydro Electric Co. had about 3,600 customers still in the dark.

Dozens of schools, primarily in southern Maine, and the University of New England cancelled classes Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says rain and gusting winds will continue across Maine on Tuesday into Wednesday as the remnants of the storm make their way across the state. A flood warning has been issued for the Swift River in the western Maine town of Roxbury.
