Rockland -
Sandy is certainly showing her strength along the coast.
Folks gathered at the Rockland Breakwater Monday to see the storm in action.
Large waves crashed over the pathway normally used by visitors to walk out to the lighthouse.
Police temporarily closed the parking lot closest to the shore, in case of flooding.
Kaylee Dennison traveled up from Owl's Head to see the sights for herself. "it's crazy, wet and cold," she says.
"When you get waves like this, it's kind of a spectacular view," says Kip Files, owner of the Victory Chimes windjammer, docked in Rockland Harbor. "You know, those folks in Bar Harbor and Acadia and stuff like this, they get to see it on the rocks all the time. But here in Rockland, this is our, this is our Thunder Hole."
Ferry service to and from Swans Island, North Haven, and Vinalhaven is canceled for Monday.
The Department of Marine Resources has also issued an emergency flood clam and shellfish closure along the coast, starting at Midnight Monday night.
The state department will evaluate the situation again Tuesday and Wednesday.
Anyone with questions can call the DMR Shellfish Hotline at 1-800-232-4733.
