Elementary School Students Experiment with Healthy Living

Old Town - Students at Old Town Elementary School are having fun with science and math. The School teamed up with Eastern Maine Community College as part of their 5-2-1-0 program. The program helps promote healthy life styles for younger children by encouraging them to eat five vegetables a day, indulge in less than two hours of electronics, add one hour of exercise, and consume zero sugary drinks.

On Thursday, students and teachers gathered in the gym to watch some science experiments related to staying healthy.

One experiment shows how a certain ingredient can change a meal from tasting sour to something that will taste sweet. Eastern Maine Community College Student, James Barry, said it's important for students to learn about what they're eating. "It's especially good at a young age because a lot of people don't learn to cook until they go to college. That's something we need to change."

"I like apples, I like a lot of fruits and I like vegetables, a lot of them." said Diego Paredes, a student at Old Town Elementary.

The school plans to have even more activities to promote healthy living.
