Stockton Springs Community Church Reaches New Heights

3

Stockton Springs - The Stockton Springs Community Church has been a landmark in the town since 1860, but lately something has been missing. A group of women from the church want to change that.

The women call themselves the "Steeple People." In 2008, the church took down the original steeple due to safety reasons. Soon after, the ladies came together to make sure another steeple would stand tall on top their church.

"We started with a letter writing campaign, where we were very fortunate to get a lot of money," said Mary Jane Costgran, a member of the "Steeple People." The women raised over $100,000, but they are not done yet.

Steeple Builder. Robert Hanscom, said there are a few more steps in the building process. "An ornate section that sits on top of this one, and then there's the bell tower that goes on top of that, and then the spire goes on top of that.". The steeple still needs three more parts. The community will raise another $60,000, but the new addition gives them the motivation they need.

"It's energized them like it's energized us. Seeing it up there has just energized me," said Costgran.

Church members are ready for a fresh start. Senior Pastor, Steven DeGroft, said "It's starting to feel like a church again. It's starting to feel like 'OK, we're back.' The new Pastor's in town, the new steeple's back up, let's move forward as a church. It's very exciting."

Construction officials say the steeple should stand 110 feet by November of 2013.
