Senate Candidate Question 10-24-12

Mainers will be voting on a number of ballot issues come November 6th.

Among them, who should replace Sen. Olympia Snowe.

We continue our coverage of the top three U.S. Senatorial candidates in political polls thus far.

TV 5 asked them about question one on the ballot.

This november, voters in Maine will again decide whether same sex marriage should be legal in our state. Are you for or against same sex marriage and why?

"I fully support marriage equality. I support equality of opportunity and equality under the law, across the board. I think that's the American way. So I'm proud to have voted for marriage equality, as a senator, as a legislator and I will continue to support marriage equality at every opportunity in the United States Senate. What's important to note that there is a federal law, the Defensive Marriage Act, which needs to be repealed. And I'm the only candidate in this race, that has pledged, on the record, to take steps to repeal it. "

Charlie Summers:
"Well, I believe that, and I was brought up to believe, that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that is my position on that. Although, I do think that if someone wants to enter into a civil contract or civil union, that's certainly their right as an American."

Angus King:
"I'm going to vote in favor of the referendum. I think it's a civil rights issue, it's a human rights issue. This is, I think it's important to emphasize, 'cause I don't think it shows up in the question, that this has nothing to do with religious marriage. It's not, it doesn't force churches to marry people that they don't want to or any of those kinds of things. But this is giving people, who are committed and are in committed, long term relationships, which it seems to me we want to encourage in our society, the same kind of legal and civil rights that everyone else enjoys. And I realize it's controversial, and there are people that are uncomfortable with it and my views on this have evolved over the years. But, you know, if, in terms of things like inheritance, visitation rights at a hospital, those kinds of things, and you know, I'm very happily married, I don't think that if, if they are two men or two women living next door to me in a committed, loving relationship, it affects my marriage at all. So, I'm voting 'yes.'">
