Senator Olympia Snowe Creating Leadership Institute

3

Bangor - Senator Olympia Snowe only has a few more months in Washington.

The long-time lawmaker announced in February that she would not be running for re-election to the U.S. Senate.

Snowe says the political atmosphere is Washington is why she's leaving, saying things didn't used to be as bad as they are now.

" We had our differences but we managed to transcend and overcome those differences to do what was right and what was in the best interest of the country, and that's not what's happening today, certainly in the United States Senate. It's designed to focus on the issues and solve problems and you have to build consensus because you need the 60 votes to get anything done, but that's also not happening. It's just sort of locked down and no means by which to bring both sides together," said Senator Olympia Snowe.

Snowe had raised $3,000,000 in campaign funds. She's using the money to create a leadership institute for high school girls, and to create a Political Action Committee to support consensus-building candidates for the future.
