Oakland Woman Sentenced for Embezzling from U.S. Postal Service


Bangor - An Oakland woman who admitted to embezzling $6,500 from the U.S. Postal Service will go to prison for 30 days.

According to court documents, Jill Hansen, 45, said she took the money between March 2010 and April 2011 to help pay for gas.

She worked at the post office in Augusta.

According to court documents, audits of the U.S. Post Office in Augusta revealed stamp stock shortages. Documents state there is video from the post office surveillance camera showing Hansen's apparent theft of postal funds. Court documents state," the defendant entered no sale transactions, voided sales of purchases made by customers and incorrectly reported sales in order to steal postal service funds." The video footage reportedly also shows Hansen " removing postal funds from her cash drawer and placing money under her shirt."

Hansen was sentenced to 30 days in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. She also must pay $6,500 in restitution.
