Randolph -
At around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, police responded to a call of a reported prescription medications theft in West Gardiner.
The suspect, 20-year-old Dustin Smith, was suspected to be at an apartment complex in Randolph.
Police determined that Smith was also wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of operating after suspension, and has three years of probation pending as a result of an aggravated assault.
A K-9 unit led police to Smith, who then threatened them with a six inch hunting knife.
They say Smith stabbed the dog with the knife, behind the left ear.
Smith then barricaded himself in an apartment with a woman and young child, who he eventually released around 9 pm. The standoff ended at about 10:40 p.m.
Smith was arrested and charged with unlawful interference with law enforcement dog with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, three counts of terrorizing, creating a police standoff, refusing to submit to arrest, and assault. He is currently awaiting arraignment which is scheduled for Friday. He is being held on a probation hold by probation and parole.
Draco, the police dog, was taken to an emergency animal clinic where he received several stitches and is expected to make a full recovery.
