Former Brewer Middle School to Become Senior Housing

Brewer - The Brewer City Council has approved a plan to convert the old Brewer Middle School into low-income senior housing.

The council on Tuesday agreed to sell the closed school to the Brewer Housing Authority.

D'arcy Main-Boyington, Brewer's economic development director, told councilors that the purchase option gives the housing authority up to a year to buy the building but allows for an extension. The cost is $15,000 if they buy within the year, or $35,000 if they extend the purchase deadline.

The housing authority is applying for low-income tax credits through Maine State Housing Authority.

The goal is to convert the building built in 1926 into 28 one-bedroom units for people age 55 and older.
