Head of Federal Agency Focused on Community Service Visits Maine

3

Bangor - President Obama's appointee to head up the Corporation for National and Community Service stopped in Maine Monday.

Wendy Spencer was in Bangor, meeting with volunteers from all over the state.

Spencer is in town to give the keynote speech at an annual service and volunteerism conference in Orono, Tuesday.

After meeting with the Maine Commission for Community Service, she said she has learned quite a bit about how Mainers help each other.

"It's just an amazing story how neighbors are helping neighbors here in Bangor and throughout Maine. And what we know about is this is a very caring state in that the last time we surveyed Maine there 345,000 Mainers who were volunteering," explained the corporation's CEO.

Spencer said the number of Mainers volunteering translates to $1 billion in value of service to community.
