Guilford - Mainer's are taking part in Domestic Violence Awareness Month by raising money for the cause.

The 16th annual Race to End Domestic Abuse was held on Sunday.

Participants took part in trail walks, a cookout, and even a farmer's market. The event was hosted by Womencare, an organization offering legal services, transitional housing, and a 24 hour helpline for abuse victims.

The event had a great turnout, including supporters from a younger crowd.

Race Coordinator, Angie Alfonso, said. "What we're aware of is that it's really going to take the next generation to make a difference in our communities"

"For us, it was a great cause to support and a great thing for the kids to see outside the academic walls what goes on for this and for the communities," said Jeremy Bousquet and Katie Joyner-Robertson, both Teachers at Penquis Valley High School.

Organizers say the community has really come together in the wake of five domestic violence related fatalities in Maine just last year.
