Students in East Millinocket Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer

3

East Millinocket - On this particular school day, the curriculum at Schenck High School in East Millinocket was designed a little differently.

"It's been a lot of work doing all these windows," said student, Rebecka Sheehan.

Sheehan's art class was tasked with painting Main Street's shops, an assignment that outlined a much bigger picture.

The sophomore said, "1 in 7 women have breast cancer, which is actually a lot, and thinking about how many people there are in the world and it's just like, I think people really need to think about this."

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the students were asked to come up with a drawing that could bring attention to the disease.

The project's organizer, Linda Osborne, explained, "So that people can understand what other people in their community are going through. We live in a community that almost every single person is touched by cancer in one way or another."

And from the high school art class to the streets of East Millinocket, it seems the illness will be etched in the minds of people here.

Student, Andrew Lawson, said, "I've had a grandmother who actually survived and another grandmother who survived, but I know a lot of people who have died from it."
