House District 59 Candidate Dies of Apparent Heart Attack


Gardiner - A Republican candidate for Maine House District 59 has died from an apparent heart attack. Daniel Bates was 61.

His wife says he died Saturday morning at home in Gardiner.

Rep. Jeff Timberlake, R-Turner, said he convinced his long-time friend to run. The other candidate in the race is Gay Grant, a Democrat. The district serves Gardiner and Randolph.

The Kennebec Journal, says a celebration of Bates' life will be held Wednesday at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner, followed by a reception at Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center.
