First Year Engineering Students Check Out UMaine Expo

3

Orono - First year engineering students at the University of Maine had a special assignment on Monday. Instead of staying in their classroom, they were sent to the Engineering Group Expo on campus.

Folks representing different engineering clubs and societies had booths set up for students to check out. The idea is to encourage freshmen to get involved early in their college careers.

"Our students can get started with these projects right from their first year, whether it be making the formula SAE car, making a concrete canoe or chemical powered car, Society of Women Engineers, all these are great organizations and we want our students to start participating as soon as they get here," said Dana Humphrey, Dean of Engineering at UMaine.

Humphrey said there is a shortage of engineers in the state. He wants to get the word out about all of the good work his students are doing.
