Nokomis Regional High School Students Act Homeless for a Night

3

Newport - Students at Nokomis Regional High School are spending the night outside.

25 students, along with a few teachers and chaperones, will be sleeping in front of Bud's Shop-n-Save in Newport.

The Nokomis Jobs for Maine's Graduates program is giving back to area homeless shelters by acting homeless for the night with their second Sleep-In-A-Box event.

"It's going to be cold and rainy, but we're going to pretend we're homeless, we get one bottled water and we sleep in boxes, we get one blanket, so we're just going to basically raise money for the homeless shelters around Maine," said Ashley Poulin, a senior and president of JMG at Nokomis Regional High School.

They'll be out at Bud's from 6 p.m. Friday night until 7 a.m. the next morning, collecting donations.

The group has already raised $300 for their Sleep-In-A-Box program.

This is a great story. It makes me very proud to have been a part of that program when I attended High School there. These students are doing a wonderful thing to bring awareness and support to the homeless people of our state. It's hard times these days and I think some young people take for granted the things they have, until they are actually out there in the real world.
