Forest Rangers Visit Penobscot Job Corps Academy

Bangor - Students at Penobscot Job Corps Academy in Bangor learned about the Maine Forest Service on Friday.

Members of the Forest Protection Division stopped by tot talk to students and show them their equipment. Rangers hope students will want to become volunteer firefighters to help with wildfires.

"It's harder and harder to get volunteers in this day and age. They're working, they can't get away and with us covering such a vast area in the wilderness areas, or the unorganized territories I should say, we can't always depend on the fulltime firefighters to help us," said Garry Parsons, with the Maine Forest Service.

Job Corp recently started a partnership with the Maine Forest Service in hopes of starting a Hot Shot firefighting program at the academy.

About 70 students have already said they are interested in the program.
