Prosecution Rests in Jay Mercier Murder Trial

Skowhegan - The prosecution has rested in the murder trial of Jay Mercier.

The defense began calling its witnesses late Wednesday morning.

Mercier is accused of killing Rita St. Peter, 20, in July 1980.

Detective Adam Kelley testified Wednesday that even after Mercier was presented with DNA evidence that proved he had sex with St. Peter, he still denied knowing her.

Mercier's attorneys have since admitted to the jury that Mercier did lie to investigators about knowing St. Peter and having sex with her. Mercier's attorneys say just because he had sex with her doesn't prove that he killed her.

Closing statements are expected to begin on Thursday.
