Hampden -
125 miles into their journey, and they haven't even scratched the surface.
Kristen Creech and William Mosebach started in Calais and are hiking until they get to West Palm Beach, Florida.
That's an estimated twenty five hundred miles, a trip that will take them close to seven months....
They're walking for people like Sandra and James Troutt of Sherman.
"On 4/6/06, we lost our grandson, specialist Dustin Harris in Bayji, Iraq. At that time we became a part of an elite group that nobody wants to belong to, but it is what it is. That's why we are here today, to support anything they do for our special heroes," said James Troutt.
They're Hiking for Heroes, a charity hike for a group called Active Heroes, a fundraiser for veterans and military families.
The Troutt's found the trek on Facebook and had to come meet the hikers in person, to have them sign the quilt hand-made by Sandra Troutt.
They also gave them dog tags with their fallen soldier's picture for the two to wear along their journey.
When the two started, they never realized how much attention this would get so quickly.
"We never realized it would come to this extent, We thought we would maybe talk to a few people and we may walk all the way down and nobody would even pay attention. But, it's caught on and this is a big thing. A lot bigger then we even realized," said Mosebach.
After their surprise greeting, they had lunch, compliments of McLaughlin's in Hampden, and had a chance to reflect on the day.
"It's touching then so much, which is touching me so much and I'm just that much happier," said Creech.
"Anytime we can do things like this, all day every day," said Mosebach.
For the Troutt's, they will leave with a memory they'll never forget.
"Words can't express it. They'll always be in our hearts and they'll never be forgotten. We try to do everything we can so people won't forget," said Troutt.
