Abandoned Dog in Jackson Finds Home

Jackson - Earlier this month, we told you about a stray dog in Jackson that local residents were trying to find.

Two families said they noticed it had been abandoned in a wooded area along Route 7, and spent the last few weeks trying to catch her to bring her to safety. Finally, Sunday, they found her.

"She was in pretty rough condition. Wicked skinny, had some quills in her side," said neighborhood residents, Pamela Marcouillier and Kris Duquette.

Sunday, Duquette called Marcouillier when he came home to find the dog in a trap they had set for her.

Marcouillier said, "She was an abused dog. She's very fearful, frightful."

A trip to the vet turned into a roundtrip back to Marcouillier's home when they said they were told the costs were too much for an animal shelter to pay, and the dog would have to be euthanized.

Marcouillier asked, "How can you ever think of putting that down? I mean, she's a beautiful creature. She really is. They all deserve a chance."

Duquette will be giving her one, taking her in as his own pet.

"It doesn't deserve to be put down after all it's been through," he said.

He has already named her Hope, a feeling that he will now never be able to lose sight of.

"There's no such thing as a bad dog, it's usually bad people, and in her case, you know, we got her in time," said Marcouillier.

I just called Belfast Veterinary Hosp. & made a donation toward Hope's vet bills. If this young man & his friend worked so hard to capture her and he subsequently adopted her, I believe it's the right thing to do to help him out with the bills. That poor creature went through so much & faced being put down if not for the kindness of these people. The vet's office told me she has an appt. on Friday to be spayed. I think it would be a great human interest story to revisit Kris Duquette and Pamela Marcoullier to see how Hope is doing. Also, perhaps it will encourage more people to help Kris monetarily. Thanks for anything you might be able to do. Mary Anne
