Farmington - Schools throughout America celebrated Constitution Day Monday.

The event was created by Congress nearly 20 years ago to encourage people to become more familiar with U.S. Constitution.

Every school that gets federal money must observe Constitution Day in some way.

At the University of Maine at Farmington there's an annual lecture that covers the most notable cases taken up by the United States Supreme Court over the past year.

Supreme court rulings on healthcare and immigration were discussed in Farmington Monday. "Even controversial difficult topics can be looked at in a way that people can look at it in a civil manner," said Political Science Professor Jim Melcher, who delivered the lecture. "The other thing is that these things are complicated. It's not just a manner of what you personally prefer, what you'd like to see happen, we're measuring this against the yardstick of the constitution."

It's the sixth consecutive year the University of Maine at Farmington has featured a Constitution Day lecture.
