Brewer Voters to Decide on $5.4 Millon School Bond

3

Brewer - Voters in Brewer will go to the polls Tuesday to decide on whether to accept a $5.4 million school bond - one that won't cost any interest.

The money would be used for a variety of repairs and structural changes at Brewer High school.

Superintendent Dan Lee says the funding is a federal bond called a Quality Zone Academy Bond.

Along with zero-percent interest, repayment doesn't start for four years.

He says among the plans at the school - expand the cafeteria, improve security and make the front of the building more handicapped accessible.

"Unfortunately, most of our schools were built in the 1950's when there was a baby boom and people thought, well we'll build a school for 4 or 5 years and once the boom goes away, we can downsize. But in truth it never went away and the buildings are still there 50-60 years later and they're in tough shape, so they need some work."

The work still needs to be done at the high school, even if voters reject the money.

Lee says if that happens, the city will have to borrow the money with interest and start paying it back immediately.

Voting takes place Tuesday at the Brewer Auditorium.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
