UMaine Celebrates the Life of the Late Honors College Dean

3

Orono - The University of Maine community gathered Friday to honor a late professor and dean.

Friends, family, students and faculty came together to celebrate the life of Charlie Slavin at the Collins Center on the Orono campus. The 58-year-old mathematician taught at the university for years, helping students in and out of the classroom. He started the honors program at the university, which he later became the dean of when it became the honors college.

Members of the honors community started the school year with a heavy heart, but they say Slavin's legacy will live on. "There's a lot of support in the honors community and Charlie really built that up. He made sure you knew that you had classmates and friends you could to to. Even with his passing, you knew there was still a community there," said Heather Ledoux, one of Slavin's many former students.

During the memorial, people shared their "Charlie stories," each of them ending with a fit of laughter and tears. Those closest to him say he will be remembered as a husband, father, and dedicated educator.
