Northeast Shrine Field Days Underway

3

Bangor - A lot of us can say this:

"We have a family member that's a clown," but Emily Braley means it literally. She has a real clown in her family. So of course, you'd expect to find her here.

"Letting the kids enjoy the festivities," said Braley, with her daughter, Olivia.

It's all part of Northeast Shrine Field Days, a big event for the clown community.

"It's an honor to host something like this in Bangor, Maine," said Jappo, an Anah Shrine clown.

One of the highlights is a clown competition which is judged on make up, balloons and skits, but it's not all about showing off.

"The bottom line, to raise money for the children's hospitals, that's what we do," said Jappo.

"To date we've served one million children over our 90 year history."

There are twenty-two Shriners' hospitals throughout North America, and these clowns, play a big role.

"We don't just heal kids, we heal their body, but we heal their mind and make them good and bring them back into the community to have fun with other kids."

So, while you might not have a real clown in your family, if you ever need the Shriners' hospital, these guys will be ready to help.

The winners of the clown competition will be announced Friday night.

Saturday, there's a big clown parade in downtown Bangor.

It starts at 2:00 PM. That means Main Street will be closed from 1:30pm to 5:00pm.

The clowns encourage everyone to come check out the fun. tTey say it will be the biggest parade Bangor has ever seen.
