Modern-Day Vikings Descend on Bangor

3

Bangor - For this group of men, the day started out with a breakfast fit for a viking.

Fitting because this group could be considered modern-day vikings.

They've been planning a trip from their home in Norway to Bangor for years now.

It started with the curious nature of Kristoffer Olsen and his quest to re-live his Norwegian heritage.

"I've probably been studying this more or less for ten years and getting more and more insights and deciding that it was time to see it in person," said Olsen.

Olsen found that Bangor has a significant viking history.

In true viking fashion, with their destination set, after arriving in Halifax, they traveled by sea on a journey to Bangor.

Luckily, for us villagers, they're not exactly like vikings.

"We don't pillage or plunder."

In fact, they had a warm welcome after their long journey.

"It's fantastic to be in Bangor, We came up here to see this beautiful marina and we met all kinds of friendly people and it's been lots of fun."

Which makes reaching the legendary shores of Bangor, or Norumbega, even better.

"We are here today to pay tribute to the city of Norumbega, which once upon a time, was around this area. We believe it was actually quite exactly here where we stand," said Olsen.

Many historians believe that even before Christopher Columbus set sail, vikings found this region, which they named Norumbega.

"It was an old viking city, inhabited most likely from people of Greenland who came here in the year 1000 and stayed here for hundreds of years," said Olsen.

For these friendly vikings, their conquest was a success.

"It's fantastic. It's a dream come true," said Olsen.
