Commuter Replaces Car with Homemade Electric Bike

3

Bangor - Tired of paying for gas? A woman from Bangor has come up with a solution.

Vicky Blanchette has been commuting to her office at University of Maine on an electric bike. She was sick of the prices at the pump and decided to build the battery-run bicycle instead.

So far, it's paying off.

Blanchette said, "I anticipate I would spend about $1,500-1,600 in gas just commuting back and forth to Bangor, right, in a year. This all total probably cost me about that much with all the parts, so I'd say in about two years I'd have it paid for."

Blanchette told us her bike can go up to about 40 miles per hour.

It uses a lithium phosphate battery, which is similar to the battery used in a Prius.
