Flags At Skowhegan Elementary School Honor 9/11 Victims

3

Skowhegan - Thousands of flags on the lawn at a Skowhegan Elementary School are turning some heads.

One of our viewers who drove by, saw the flags, and sent us an email to see what was going on.

Here's what we found out. The flags are part of a tribute to those who lost their lives during the terrorists attacks on 9/11.

There are 2937 flags, one for each victim. Flags representing the more than 30 nationalities of the victims who died that day are on display.

Retired teacher Larry Ross has done the exercise every year with the students. "These are young students, these are 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. So I don't tell them what they're supposed to think about it. I give them the chance to think about it and I try to tell the story in some very simple, personal terms. Bringing it down to people if I could," Ross said.

Students will take the flags down as the final part of the exercise on Tuesday when they'll duscuss what they've learned.
