Three Communities in the State Won't Enforce Political Sign Law

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine says three communities in the state have agreed not to enforce local ordinances that restrict political lawn signs that appear to be in conflict with state law and the U.S. Constitution.

An ACLU lawyer told the Sun Journal, Thursday that Lewiston, Farmington and Alfred had restricted free speech and infringed upon the rights of property owners with their bylaws.

Tim Lajoie, a Republican candidate for the Maine House, said he challenged the city of Lewiston's ordinance that said campaign lawn signs could not be put out prior to six weeks before the election, even on private property. He says he's pleased with the decision.

The ACLU wants the communities to revise their ordinances.
