Tenth Annual Bug Maine-ia Crawls Through the Maine State Museum in Augusta

3

Augusta - There were lots of little legs scurrying around the Maine State Museum in Augusta.

Not just the ones that walk on two feet.

"This is our 10th Annual Bug Maine-ia. It is one of my favorite days and it's one of the busiest days in the museum," said Joanna Torow, Chief Educator at the Maine State Museum.

Kids from all over Maine came to worm their way through the building and learn everything there is to know about creepy-crawlers.

"This gives our students a chance to get out of the school and really interact with bugs and insects and spiders and really learn about them in an experimental way," said Torow.

Ever wondered what it's like to hold a big, furry tarantula? Students from Center School in Orrington can tell you all about it.

"It's really cool. It was fury. It was really awesome."
"I think it's really cool how we live in Maine, and there's a spider that doesn't even live here and it's so far away. It was really exciting."
"It kind of tickled me when it was walking around."
"It was light! I don't even get it!"

They can also tell you why not to hold one.

"Cause it freaks me out!"
"It's hairy and I don't like it!"

For organizers, watching the kids throughout the day is the best part.

"Just watching how excited they get, it's in their expression, their energy as they're moving through the building. They just can't wait to see what the next thing is," said Torow.
