Police Charge Driver Who Reportedly Hit Utility Pole, Sparking Hospital Fire

Machias - Police have now charged the driver that reportedly crashed into a utility pole in Machias Monday night, sparking a fire at Down East Community Hospital.

Fire crews say a crash on Court Street around 9:30 PM caused a power surge at the hospital, leading to an electrical fire. We're told there was a lot of smoke in the radiology wing, but no one had to be evacuated.

48-year-old Daniel Snowdeal of Jonesboro was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Police say the accident is still being investigated and more charges are possible.
