Hermon -
Fire Departments all over Maine are remembering 9/11 in different ways.
In Hermon, Rescue Chief Sherman Mason set up a roadside memorial at his home, as he's done every year since the 9/11 attacks.
It's pretty simple, made up of just a flag, a pair of old retired boots and a helmet. But it has a deep meaning, symbolizing the firefighters who were just doing their jobs that day and never came home.
Mason remembers watching the attacks on TV back on September 11, 2001.
"I realized there were firefighters obviously going up into those buildings and when they collapsed, I just couldn't believe it because I knew even without hearing that probably at least a few have died or obviously had gotten hurt. And when I heard there were hundreds of firefighters dying it really hit home," said Mason.
Mason said the memorial is to make sure those men and women are never forgotten.
And to remind folks driving by of the dangers first responders face at their jobs everyday.
