Power Surge Sparks Electrical Fire at Machias Hospital

3

Machias - An electrical fire broke out at Down East Community Hospital in Machias Monday night.

Authorities say it was sparked from a power surge, after a car hit a utility pole outside the facility on Court Street.

The crash happened a little before 10 p.m.

Hospital officials say smoke filled the radiology wing after wires melted in the main electrical room.

Fire fighters were able to get the smoke out quickly, and no evacuations were necessary.

We're told fire crews were on the scene for about three hours.

Down Eeast Community Hospital officials say all services have been restored except for the MRI in the radiology department and that is expected to be up and running later Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Machias police are looking for the driver, who took off after the crash. It's believed they suffered some type of injury.
