"What the college was looking to do in implementing this sort of suite-style living was to get students who are really focused on the academic portion and bring it into the residential portion," says Alicia Rea, Resident Director at Husson University.

The result is the new Living And Learning Center at the Bangor university. Open to upper classmen and graduate students only, the facility is designed to provide a fluid learning environment.

"It's going to be a good experience for students, says Rob Mathieu, a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. "They get to co-exist in a professional environment."

The second, third, fourth and fifth floors are living space, while the first is dedicated to hands-on classrooms used for what the university calls "experential learning."

"In the criminal justice center, they can set up and analyze crime scenes and leave them there for days, and then review it through the use of cameras," explains Rea. "In the graduate counseling program, they have mini-counseling rooms where they can have sessions with clients, and have them filmed and reviewed by the class."

Students began living and learning in the new building the first week of September.

"I think everyone was just blown away by the accommodations that the college has made for them, really putting students and their academic lives first," says Rea.
