EMCC Offering Classes for Casino Dealers

Bangor - Students across the country are heading back to the classroom.

On a certain bangor campus, some students are eagerly dealing with a new course that's being taught.

Jackie De Tore has the story.

Some students are heading back to Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor to persue majors like psychology and physics, but one group is learning all about cards.

"It's a great opportunity for people who want to start a new career."

EMCC teamed up with Hollywood Casino earlier this year to offer courses on dealing tables games at the Bangor casino.

"We try to mimic the real life environment of a casino as much as possible"

Many of the people who take the class are hired by the casino, making finding a job in a bad economy, a little easier.

"We've hired close to 100 people."

Whether they start a new career or need a second job, it's definitely a change of pace.

"Well, I was a carpenter my entire life and I was unemployed at the time and I was really worried about finding work because of the economy and this opportunity came along. I took the math quiz and got in and it's been nothing but fun."

Their next round of classes will focus on Black Jack, but the the course really teaches students how to be a successful dealer.

"Learn the game, focus on game protection and just become proficient."

And of course, always protect the chips.
