Another Maine college campus is going tobacco-free.
The University of Maine at Augusta will ban tobacco use on its campus starting in January. Campus officials plan more outreach and education on the policy this fall before the ban kicks in on January 1st.
The state university system's Augusta campus joins the Orono and Farmington campuses, Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield and the city of Augusta which have enacted similar policies in the past two years. The University of Southern Maine will go tobacco-free on January 1st, and Colby College in Waterville will start limiting tobacco use this fall with a goal to ban it next fall.
UMA's policy also covers its Bangor campus and nine University College centers.
