Bangor -
Dozens of kids in Bangor spent one of their last days of summer in the garden Monday.
They've been taking part in the Kids Can Grow program.
It's put on by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office and the Bangor Housing Authority.
The kids started working on the garden in April after the beds were built at the Housing Authority Community Center on Davis Road.
Every Monday since then, they'd tend to their crops and enjoy the tasty results.
This was the final day of harvest until the fall.
Kaleigh Quinn says, "I got green beans and tomatoes and broccoli and some radishes."
Kate Garland with University of Maine Cooperative Extension says, "I think everyone should have a chance to be their own farmer at some point in their lives and to give the kids a chance and, actually, the parents - some of the parents have never gardened before - so to give everyone a chance to learn together is really wonderful."
Organizers say the kids also learned about responsibility and taking pride in their work.
They hope some of those skills will translate into the classroom, too.
The young gardeners will meet again after school starts to tend to their fall crops.
