Penobscot Indian Nation To Sue State Over Penobscot River

The Penobscot Indian Nation is suing the state over control over the Penobscot River.

Back in 1988, then Attorney General James Tierney gave tribal members the right to fish in the river, something they have done for hundreds of years.

But Attorney General William Schneider issued an advisory opinion this month say the tribe has authority over it's land, but not the river.

Schneider says the state has exclusive regulation over river activities.

The tribe went to court this week to seek an injunction to maintain it's authority over the river.
