Bangor -
Across from the ruler of Maine's burgers, tucked behind America's famed golden arches, is a taste you'd typically find a few hundred miles south of Broadway in Bangor.
"We do pulled pork, ribs, chicken, turkey," said Dewey Hasbrouck, owner of Moe's Original Bar-B-Que.
The menu is a favorite of Hasbrouck, who despite being a native of Orono has quite the appetite for some old-fashioned southern cooking.
"Every day we have macaroni and cheese, squash casserole, fried okra. A good southern meal for me is when I'm clearing the plate off and taking a nap afterward," Hasbrouck said.
After living in Nashville, he decided to move home and give Bangor a taste of what he felt it was missing. The barbeque enthusiast said, "It was kind of my style of barbeque that I liked, but I didn't know whether or not other people would like it up here."
On any given day, the lunch rush speaks for itself.
"We probably get 150-200 people a day," said Hasbrouck.
And with a spot at the American Folk Festival this year, the customer base could grow even bigger.
"I worry when people come in here to lunch, and I see them just polish off a huge plate of ribs and macaroni and cheese and I'm like good lord, they're going to be useless in the afternoon. So, my biggest fear is that we're going to diminish the productivity level of Bangor in the afternoons," said Hasbrouck.
Not the most unappetizing thought.
