Palmyra Soup Kitchen To Close

3

Palmyra - The soup kitchen in Palmyra will close permanently Thursday.

Herbert Pearl, the pastor who runs the soup kitchen on Route 2, says they're out of money.

Recently they've only had enough money to serve lunch three days a week, but now they can't even afford to do that.

Thursday at noon they'll serve their last meal. "The need is there. The need is always there," Pearl said Wednesday. "It's just a matter of no funds. You can't pay Central Maine Power with a can of string beans. It don't work like that. That's just the way it is."

Pearl says he had been taking money out of his own pocket to support the soup kitchen, but he can't afford to do it anymore.

The church will continue to put on its annual Thanksgiving dinner and serve coffee and doughnuts at the old soup kitchen Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
