Benton -
5 people are in the hospital after a two car collision Monday.
The Kennebec County Sheriff's office got a call around 6PM about an accident at the intersection on Bellsqueeze Road and the Bangor Road in Benton.
There was a report of one car being on fire, but a passerby was able to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher.
Police say eyewitnesses tell them that 53-year-old Carolyn Shade of North Carolina crossed the center line and 31 year old Benjamin Pederson of Burnham swerved to avoid hitting her.
We're told Shade then attempted to correct her direction and the two cars ended up colliding head on.
Shade was trapped in her vehicle and rescue crews had to help extricate her from the car.
She was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Her passenger was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Pederson and his passengers were also taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Police continue to investigate the accident.
