Belgrade -
Two children and a dog can thank a quick-thinking teenager for getting them out of a burning home in Belgrade Monday afternoon.
Fire broke out the house on Smithfield Road just after noon.
At least five crews - Belgrade, Oakland, Smithfield, Rome, and Waterville - responded to the fire that appeared to start back up after crews thought they had it under control.
17-year-old Amanda Garboski from Belgrade Lakes, who was babysitting two children who lived at the home, said she heard the smoke alarms in the house go off while they were having lunch. "I heard a popping noise coming from outside and a whole bunch of smoke got right in the kitchen," she said. "So I opened the door and saw all the flames and yelled to the kids get out of the house, grabbed the dog, and came out. And I called 911 right away, then got ahold of their parents."
We're told the family had only been living there less than three months. They're staying with family for the time being. No word yet on what caused the fire.
