State GOP Delegates Await Convention Seat Rulings

Augusta - As Ron Paul's supporters in Maine pack their bags for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., the delegates don't even know whether they'll be seated.

The answers should become clearer this week when convention committees take up challenges to their election as delegates.

At a raucous GOP state convention in May that was taken over by supporters of the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman, they were elected to 21 of 24 delegate seats to the national convention, set for Aug. 27-30. Late last month, mainstream Republicans filed a challenge to the Ron Paul slate, saying their election violated the convention rules.

This week, the challenge goes to the national party's committees on rules and credentials, which could decide whether the elections stand.
