Bar Harbor/Trenton -
While travelling down Route 1A on your way to Bar Harbor, fresh lobster from the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound can be awfully tempting. This summer, folks taking a different mode of transportation to Bar Harbor will be able to enjoy those local lobsters as well.
The cruiseline Holland America has agreed to buy lobsters from Trenton Bridge when their ships visit this season. On Friday, the cruiseline bought 2,000 lbs of lobster for one ship alone.
It's no secret that Maine lobstermen are suffering this season with too many lobsters and not enough demand. So local and state government officials contacted the cruiselines.
"What we needed to do was somehow increase demand and we have a lot of cruiseships in town here in the summer, and specifically the fall, and we thought, 'Wow, there's a built-in Market,'" said Bar Harbor Town Councilor Paul Paradis.
Holland America responded enthusiastically. The company was happy to help out local lobstermen by taking these delicious crustaceans off their hands.
Passengers seem pretty pleased too.
"I'm in Maine so I've got to have a lobster roll cause I've never had a lobster roll, and the ship has bought Maine lobster to serve for dinner tonight so I'm really looking forward to a lot of lobster," said Ann Landau, a passenger from Miama, FL.
Paradis said it's a win/win.
He said, "It was a direct benefit to the fishermen, direct benefit to the cruise lines and direct benefit to the passengers. They're coming here to see Maine and Maine lobster is Maine at its best."
