Rockland - They call them flying legends.

That's because these planes flew during WWII and Chris Griffith, the president of the Texas Flying Legends Museum brought quite a fleet to Maine.

"Well today we brought five planes. We brought the bomber which is right behind us there's a B-25 J. Mitchell bomber and then beside that we have a navy FG-1D Corsair, we have two B-51 D model mustangs and the only flying Japanese zero left in the world an A6- M2 model," said Griffith.

Friday's mission: Take an event kickoff to new heights.

And can these planes put on a show!

"It was really cool... They did a lot of loops and they went really close to the water and it was like they were going to land on the water. And then it was cool when they left in and were all in a big V," said spectator Mary Claire Aranowski.

"This was phenomenal. I haven't seen the planes flying like this since 1945 when they all flew over Yarmouth coming back from Europe," said spectator Bob Bishop.

They took to the sky to start the 2nd Annual Penobscot Bay Rendezvous.

"We like to open these events, we were invited in to open them so we come and do an air show over the festivities before they start before, what they call, first gun," said Griffith.


It's a three day event for boat lovers up for some friendly competition.

"Racing starts today for the sailboats, I've got 46 boats just over my shoulder in the distance and they'll be sailing all afternoon," said event organizer, Marine Read.

Sailors from all over joined the festivities.

"We actually had someone join us last night from Holland," said Read.

And for this rendezvous, location is everything.

"What they're coming for is Maine and this area, really this is just an unbelievable destination and we're glad to lay it out for the people to enjoy," said Read.

And if conditions on the sea stay like this, it will be a rendevous to remember.
