RSU 19 Budget Shortfall Discussion Draws Big Crowd To Meeting

3

Newport - RSU 19 is facing a major budget shortfall.

Earlier this month, it looked like a $1.2 million dollar gap, but at a meeting Tuesday, it was revealed that that number might be closer to $1.9 million dollars.

About a hundred people packed into Nokomis High School for a meeting to discuss how the school district got into this situation.

Superintendent Gregory Potter says there is nothing criminal about the budget gap, meaning no one stole from the school district.

He says it's more along the lines of the district planning over optimistically the last two budgets.

The district recently had to take out a $1.5 million dollar loan in order to pay teachers.

At the meeting, Potter said that without a solid plan, they will not be able to pay teachers come November.

His suggestion for this problem is to take out a loan and pay it back over five years.

That plan would have to be voted on by residents.

Potter went on to say that if that plan was shot down by voters, things would get drastic and programs, like athletics, would start to be cut.
