Vegetable Garden in Veazie Thrives in Unlikely Space

3

Veazie - In a small 2 x 100 foot space on a busy road in Veazie, one gardener has put her green thumb to the test and it passed with flying colors.

State Representative Stacey Guerin calls it the best garden she's ever had.

Guerin and her husband bought R.M. Flagg Food Service Equipment two years ago. Last year, Guerin couldn't keep up with her work and her gardening.

She said, "My vegetable garden at home had kind of gone all to pieces because I was busy with the legislature and then when the legislature adjourned I was busy here."

So she decided to bring her garden to work.

She planted herbs, 17 different tomato plants, plus other vegetables like eggplant and broccoli. Then she watched it all grow.

"It's worked out really well. It gives me a little break during the day and it's something that brings a lot of joy to my heart," said Guerin.

Customers have taken note of the different kinds of greens.

Michaele Bailey of Levant said, "I haven't been here all summer, but when I drove in I saw this vegetable garden where most businesses might put plants and I thought, 'What a gorgeous, edible landscape.'"

"Our customers are chefs and homecooks so they all like food. They're very interested in the plants and herbs that I'm growing," added Guerin.

She said it's amazing what you can grow, even in tight quarters.

"It's just a very typical urban garden using a small space, you can kind of do intensive gardening," said Guerin.

Most of the vegetables will end up at the Guerin family's dinner table. But Guerin also has plans to donate some veggies to local seniors and even some lucky customers.
