A spokeswoman for Gov. Paul LePage says the Republican's recent comment that Maine students are "looked down upon" in the rest of the country was based on his own experiences and not on any specific data or study.
Spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett tells the Bangor Daily News, that as a businessman LePage formed his opinion through conversations with others and it is "anecdotal."
LePage made the comment during a July 25 news conference at which he and Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen announced their new education reform initiatives.
Democratic state Sen. Justin Alfond called LePage's statement "embarrassing" and said it puts Maine in the "wrong light." Alfond, a member of the Legislature's Education Committee, said the state has many great entrepreneurs, students and teachers.
