Veterans for Peace Remember the World War II Bombings

Bangor - Next week marks the 67th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroahima and Nagasaki.

People gathered in Pierce Park Saturday to remember the lives lost in the bombings.

World War II was the only time nuclear weapons have ever been used for military purposes.

The Bangor Chapter of Veterans for Peace organized the event and called for an end to the use of nuclear weapons.

Vice President of the Bangor Chapter, Al Larson, said "We'd like to see all nuclear weapons destroyed and an entire world be rid of all of them. Friend and foe alike and we're here today to make some statements regarding that effort and try to make people aware of what today signifies."

The demonstrations included guest speakers and used chalk outlines to represent the lives lost in the bombings

My Father was in British Columbia waiting to leave on teh Invasion force from Canada toinvade Japan. The government expectedover a million allies troops would be killed and countless millions of Japanese. The two bombs caused over 100,000 Japanese casualties. This was a small amount compared to teh numbers of killed if an invasion took place. Now nuclear bombs are mostly a deterent from another cuntry using them. These pin heads from the veterans for peace are way off their mark. I would dare say not one of these guys ever served a day in the field in a war?
